Bellingen Shire is an amazing place to live. With pristine beaches, fertile farmland and World Heritage Rainforests it is home to a diverse mix of farming families, artists, craftspeople, professionals, workers and musicians of all types, families who want their children to have a country town upbringing away from the big cities and those who simply want a quieter life with easy access to Brisbane and Sydney.
Dorrigo is renowned for its picturesque waterfalls, rainforest and productive farmlands. With the impact of the internet on the retail industry most small towns have been struggling through recent years. Empty shops have become the norm throughout regional Australia and Dorrigo has been no different. In the last twelve months, however, business in Dorrigo has been growing as confidence in the Dorrigo economy has increased. Eight new businesses have opened in Dorrigo’s main business district in the last twelve months with at least two more to open in the near future. These businesses include Hillbilly Hijinks (vintage and collectable art), Onemobdreaming (indigenous art gallery), The Hunter Collective (quality funky second hand clothes), Red Cedar Emporium (clothing, homewares and jewellery), The Spirit of Spa (beautician), Dorrigo Health and Wellbeing (medical practice) and Fireground Leadership and Training (fire training, team and leadership training). There are even more micro-businesses that have started up with an online focus which have the potential to grow into sustainable enterprises.
This is not to mention the many established businesses and producers which have managed to survive the recent tough times with friendly service, skill and quality products. With the Heritage Hotel, both a landmark building and a landmark business in the town, celebrating their 90th birthday and with cattle prices and retail confidence on the rise, the future for Dorrigo and our local economy looks great.
Dorrigo Chamber of Commerce offers support to new and established businesses by offering an advertising and support network for Dorrigo businesses as well as notifying businesses of new opportunities that arise through government departments, grants and private enterprise.
