Make an early start is our advice and take a picnic because there's not much to buy along the way. This is a real day out in the wilderness areas of the Great Dividing Range.
Take the Armidale Road to Ebor Falls and take the 600 meter walk along the top of the gorge to see the two drops of the Ebor Falls and then you can look out at the Lower Falls over the impressive Guy Fawkes National Park (named as such because it was discovered by Guy Fawkes on the 5. November). Drive on the turnoff to Dutton Trout Hatchery and New England National Park about 5km on the left. After about 15km there is a sign to the right Styx River. Take this road (dirt) along the ridgetop. There are a couple of great viewing platforms along the way, and the road soon drops steeply into the Styx River valley. You don't need a 4 wheel drive. You'll see the sign about 30 km on the Wattle Flat Picnic Area. It's just perfect for a picnic - secluded yet grassed and plenty of barbeques just a kilometre off the road. Back on the road you will pass Jeogla, which is not a place but one of Australia's biggest stud cattle properties and you will eventually come out on the Armidale Grafton Road. Turn right here for about 10km and then you will see a road off to the left heading to Wogwibinda.
This is a grand drive, right through private cattle properties. Remember, the cattle have the right of way. You are on a flat stretch of road but still high up in the range and there are great views and vistas. After 30km you join the Guyra-Ebor Road (some bitumen, some dirt) and you'll be glad to stop at FussPots Coffee House for an afternoon cuppa, around a roaring fire in winter or al fresco in summer before getting back to Dorrigo for a well-earned sleep.
